Providing Scholarships for Students in Freestone County

In 2023, the Freestone County Go Texan awarded $24,000.00 in scholarships alone. In addition to scholarships, our organization has been involved in the community by  donating to other local nonprofits, lending a helping hand to a family in need, and adding on $9,000.00 to the seniors that participated in the local livestock sale.

Our Mission

A little bit about Freestone County Go Texan. We are a nonprofit organization; we operate under the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Our purpose is to provide scholarships for all the schools in the county… Fairfield, Teague and Wortham.

This organization was formed in 1985. It has had its ups and downs; the current board has had success that this organization hasn’t seen before. We are all so very proud of how far we have come. In 2023 we were fortunate enough to award $24,000.00 in scholarships alone. Recently we have been able to do more than just scholarships, such as donating to other local nonprofits, lend a helping hand to a family in need, and adding on $9,000.00 to the seniors that participated in our local livestock sale. Our biggest change was being able to host our first annual BBQ Cook-Off in 2022 and it was a major success. A success we would not have had without the support of local businesses and our FREECO family. We are gearing up to host our THIRD annual Cook-Off in April of 2024.

HLSR has high standards and requirements we must meet, to give one of “our” local kids a chance at the HLSR $20,000.00 scholarship. We all work very hard to make sure we give the Freestone County youth as much as we can and open every door possible for them. Freestone County Go Texan has big plans for the years to come. We participate in every local event, hosting corn-hole, horseshoe and washer tournaments, and we hope to be given the opportunity to do even more.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo promotes agriculture by hosting an annual, family-friendly experience that educates and entertains the public, supports Texas youth, showcases Western heritage and provides year-round educational support within the community.

Since its beginning in 1932, the Rodeo has committed more than $575 million to Texas youth and education.
